HIPAA Security Rule Toolkit

Now that the Office for Civil Rights is conducting audits, as required under the HITECH Act, you should have a number of tools to use in your self-audit. There are many tools out there, and WEDI is highlighting one that is government-developed and available at no cost. Those in the audience will need do their own research to determine which tool is the best for them.

The NIST HIPPA Security Rule Toolkit is available for download from the NIST website at http://scap.nist.gov/hipaa/. The NIST HIPAA Security Rule Toolkit is intended to help organizations better understand the requirements of the HIPAA Security Rule, implement those requirements, and assess those implementations in their operational environment.

Such a tool is only one part of the process of becoming compliant with the HIPAA Security requirements. All healthcare entities that create, maintain or use PHI and ePHI will need to do a full risk analysis. The WEDI Security and Privacy Workgroup has a new subworkgroup (SWG) dedicated to Privacy and Risk Analysis in the much expanded EHR and HIE environment. The SWG is working on a Risk Analysis white paper.
