| Considered the “gold standard” throughout the industry, the NCPDP Pharmacy Database acts as the enumerator of the legacy NCPDP Provider ID Number (formerly NABP Number). The NCPDP Pharmacy Database is a comprehensive database that houses demographic, relationship and licensing information for nearly 74,000 pharmacies within the United States and its territories and is the industry’s most comprehensive pharmacy NPI crosswalk tool. NCPDP works closely with CMS acting as the only EFIO (Electronic File Interchange Organization) for pharmacy, enumerating and updating pharmacies directly with the NPPES system. |
The Future
In May 2008 the next generation of the NCPDP Pharmacy Database product will be available. It will offer pharmacies more access and control over their own information, with the ability to update and view their data in a real-time online environment. Based on requests throughout industry, subscribers to the product will have more robust subscription options such as real-time access to data and customizable reporting.
NCPDP believes that the enhancement is only a step on the evolutionary path of their trusted database that began over two decades ago.

Obtaining and Maintaining NCPDP Provider IDs
Now that pharmacies use their NPI to bill, it is critically important that pharmacies continue to obtain and maintain information on their NCPDP Provider IDs. Doing so is vital to reimbursement by many third party plans and your NCPDP Provider ID is used in many prescriber e-prescribing applications. Your NCPDP Provider ID (formerly the NABP number) is also used by many payers and third party entities to indentify information on your pharmacies. CMS also uses this information to validate pharmacies.
NCPDP has created tools available via a web browser at www.NCPDPonline.org to logon and maintain your pharmacy data. These new tools include the ability to view, edit and download your data. Go to www.NCPDPonline.org and ensure the data NCPDP currently has on your store(s) is correct. A user name and password will be provided to you beginning in late summer 2008. If you are applying for a new NCPDP Provider ID for a new store, you may create your own user name and password when applying at www.NCPDPonline.org.
NCPDP has been certified by CMS and therefore you have the opportunity to authorize NCPDP to update the CMS National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) electronically simply by clicking and giving NCPDP authorization to do so on your online record - this keeps your data in synch.
